Objective: to identify the social factors that have an impact on the transition from elementary to secondary school and how these factors affect students’ social behavior. Methodology: qualitative research approach designed from the social theory of the complementarity (Murcia & Jaramillo, 2008), which allows the interpretation and deepening of social realities. The elements applied as techniques and instruments to collect data were the narrative inquiry and in-depth interviews. Findings: the transition from elementary to secondary school reveals multiple aspects or human, physical, psychological, household, emotional, pedagogical, locative, political and economic circumstances that have an impact on the school coexistence and on the personality setting among the social actors in the school. Conclusions: the relation teacher-student is a strong bond in elementary school, while in the secondary school this bond vanishes. In addition to this, the relation of otherness generates emotional destabilization, new social conducts, aspects that require a greater responsibility and a high degree of autonomy.
