Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • Your contribution is focused on the educational sciences.
  • The text should not exceed 20 pages (34,000 characters with space).
  • For peer-reviewed texts (research articles, reflection articles and case studies), at least 20 bibliographic references must be cited.
  • To have filled out the assignment of rights form that can be downloaded from the submission page.
  • To have filled out the data bank form for authors of articles that can be downloaded from the submission page.
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF or WordPerfect format.
  • The text is single spaced; 12 point font size; italics are used instead of underlining (except in URLs); and all illustrations, figures and tables are placed in the appropriate places in the text, rather than at the end.

GUIDE FOR AUTHORS 

The Catholic University of Manizales (UCM) aware of the need of an effective engagement with the globalized world of science and technology throughout a permanent, systematized exchange of information and knowledge, publishes a RESEARCH JOURNAL whose primary purpose is to support and promote the intelectual production of the administrative staff, professors, students, and alumni as prospects for the creation and connection with academic networks and communities, and as a possibility to generate an interdisciplinar confrontation. 

For this purpose, this Journal issues a call for all professors and researchers of Colombian and foreign universities to send their intellectual productions, in order to perform a careful review on them and, according to the outcomes, published them in our journal.

Type of papers accepted for publication 

According to the guidelines provided by Publindex and Colciencias, the papers to be published are:

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY

PAPERS: papers which present findings resulting from scientific research or technological development projects. 

These papers should include: title, authors, analytical abstract, (objective, methodology, findings and conclusions, 150 words maximum), key words (6 key words from the UNESCO Thesaurus), introduction, materials and methods, results, results discussion, conclusions and list  of references (minimum 20 print or electronic sources which have been cited in the body of the article as quotations or reference citations), figures, charts or photographs related to the subject matter.

For the submission of this type of articles, authors should fill out the information extension form about the Research Project from which the article was originated.

ORIGINAL REFLECTION PAPERS: findings of

studies done by the author(s) from an analytical, interpretative, or critical perspective about a theoretical or practical issue, resorting to original sources. 

Original Reflection Papers should include: title, authors, analytical abstract, (objective, methodology, findings and conclusions, 150 words maximum), key words (6 key  words  from the UNESCO Thesaurus), introduction, subtitles, conclusions and list of references

(minimum 20 print or electronic sources which have been cited in the body of the article as quotations or reference citations), figures, charts or photographs related to the subject matter (footnotes with their corresponding copyright). Do not exceed 20 pages. 

For the submission of this type of articles, authors should fill out the information extension form about the Research Project from which the article was originated. 

REVIEW ARTICLES: studies carried out with the purpose of providing an overall perspective on the general state of a specific mastery on sciences and technology, of its evolution throughout a period in which the perspectives of development and future evolution are remarked. It is characterized by presenting a thorough documental review of at least 50 projects concerning research.

Review articles should include: title, authors, analytical abstract, (objective, methodology, findings and conclusions, 150 words maximum), key words (6 key words from the UNESCO Thesaurus), introduction, subtitles, conclusions and list of references (minimum 20 in print or electronic sources which have been cited in the body of the article as  literal  quotations  or reference citations), figures, charts or photographs related to the subject matter (footnotes with their corresponding copyright). Do not exceed 20 pages.

For the submission of this type of articles, authors should fill out the information extension form about the Research Project from which the article was originated.

SHORT ARTICLES: these papers publish original partial or preliminary results from a scientific or technological research that requires prompt publication. 

Short articles should include: title, authors, abstract (maximum 150 words), key words (maximum 6 keywords from the UNESCO Thesaurus), introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, conclusions and list of references (minimum 20 print or electronic sources which have been cited in the body of the article as quotations or reference citations), figures, tables, diagrams or photographs related to the topic (including footnotes with the corresponding copyright). Do not exceed 10 pages. For the submission of this type of articles, authors should fill out the information extension form about the Research Project from which the article was originated.

Case Reports: this type of paper publishes the results of studies about a particular situation. Its purpose is to disseminate the technical experiences or methodologies from a specific case. Case reports should include an analytical review of analogous cases. 

Case reports should include: title, authors, abstract (maximum 150 words), key words (maximum 6 keywords from the UNESCO Thesaurus), introduction, subtitles, conclusions and list of references (minimum 20 print or electronic sources which have been cited in the body of the article as quotations or reference citations), figures, tables, charts or photographs related to the topic (including footnotes with the corresponding copyright). Do not exceed 10 pages.

Topic Review: this paper publishes a critical review on a particular topic. 

Topic Review should include: title, authors, abstract (maximum 150 words), key words (maximum 6 keywords from the UNESCO Thesaurus), introduction, subtitles, conclusions and list of references (minimum 20 print or electronic sources which have been cited in the body of the article as quotations or reference citations), figures, tables, charts or photographs related to the topic (including footnotes with the corresponding copyright). Do not exceed 10 pages.

Symposia Pieces: papers presented in academic events that are considered original and current contributions. 

Symposia Pieces should include: title, authors, abstract (maximum 150 words), key words (maximum 6 keywords from the UNESCO Thesaurus), introduction, subtitles, conclusions and list of references (minimum 20 print or electronic sources which have been cited in the body of the article as quotations or reference citations), figures, tables, charts or photographs related to the topic (including footnotes with the corresponding copyright). Do not exceed 10 pages.

The presentations should not have been published in the event proceedings or similar documents. They should have the written permission of the organization of the event in which the presentation was given. 

Bibliographic Review: critical papers about theory, research or technology literature. 

Bibliographic Review should include: title, authors, abstract (maximum 150 words), key words (maximum 6 keywords from the UNESCO Thesaurus), introduction, subtitles, conclusions, list of references and visual illustrations related to the topic (including footnotes with the corresponding copyright). Do not exceed 5 pages.

Translations: classic or current literature translations or translation of historical or particular interest documents for the field of interest of the journal. 

Translations should include: faithfulness to the original text. The original text’s author, heir or publishing house holder of the copyrights and right to publish should provide a written permission for translation and publication. Additionally, the translation should be approved by the Languages Center of the University. 

Publication guidelines 

Papers should be original and not under simultaneous consideration for publication elsewhere including electronic and hard copy, national or international journals. 

Papers  are   submitted   to   the   Research and Postgraduate Courses Office of The Catholic University of Manizales or by email: revistaeducacion@ucm.edu.co, addressed to the Editorial Committee of the Research Journal of the UCM. 

The length should be considered according to the type of paper. 

The author(s) are requested to fill out and submit a copy of the Authors Data Bank attached form. 

The author(s) are requested to fill out and submit a copy of the form for publications originated from the research projects. 

The author(s) are requested to fill out and submit a copy of the copyright transfer agreement form to the Research Journal of the UCM when submitting the paper. (http://www.ucm.edu.co/). 

Furthermore, the author(s) are requested to inform the Research Journal of the University about any previous partial or total publication of the same material. 

The author(s) are requested to submit the necessary authorizations to publish tables, figures, excerpts of other people’s papers or other material protected by copyright. Similarly, an authorization is needed to publish photographs or information requiring inform consent for publication.

The heading of each article must include the title of the article (in capital letters and bold), authors’ name and last name, updated academic qualifications, authors’ post, name of the institution where they work, city and country, and email address (as a footnote).

Tables and figures (photographs, images and diagrams) must have number, title, and legends (if needed); title or reference to the source and should be submitted in a separate document in JPG or PNG format. 

Citations and list of references must comply with the last edition of the APA –American Psychological Association– style manual. 

The list of references must appear at the end of the article. 

The receipt of the paper does not oblige the journal to publish it.

Papers submitted for publication will be sent to two reading peers with expertise in the subject matter. They will evaluate and make an assessment regarding the quality and structure of the article. The evaluation follows the double- blind review process in which the anonymity of both the reading peer and the author is kept.

The acceptance or rejection of a paper will be acknowledged in writing to each author. It will include the assessment made by the reading peer…

If the paper needs modifications or corrections to the content, it will be sent back to the author(s) setting a deadline for the modifications.

If the paper needs minor form modifications, the Editorial Committee reserves the right to make them. 

Each author of a published paper will receive a hard copy of the journal through certified mail.

Scientific and Technologic Research Articles

Documents presenting results derived from scientific research or technological development projects. They must contain title, authors, analytical summary (objective, methodology, findings and conclusions; maximum extension of 400 words), keywords (maximum 6 terms of the Unesco Thesaurus), introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion of results, conclusions and references (at least 20 physical or virtual texts that have been cited in the body of the article textually or indirectly), figures, tables or images related to the subject (with footnotes with the respective copyright). Its length should not exceed 20 pages (34,000 characters with spaces).

In order to submit an article of this type, the format for more information on the research project from which it is derived must be filled out.

Case studies

These papers publish the results of a study on a particular situation with the purpose of disseminating the technical or methodological experiences obtained in a specific case. They must have an analytical review of analogous cases. Their length should not exceed 10 pages (17,000 characters with spaces).
